How does a night vision clip-on work?

A night vision clip-on attaches to the eyepiece or ocular lens front of a scope. Night vision clip-ons that attach to the front of a scope contain a CMOS night vision video camera and lens that display the night vision image on a small LCD display in front of your day time rifle scope. The day scope is just used to view the LCD display in the clip-on.

A night vision clip-on like Digital Crosshairs 1000 that mounts on the eyepiece of a rifle scope contains a CMOS night vision video camera that looks down the day time rifle scope's lense and takes full advantage of the scope's optics. This method uses the features of the day scope to the advantage of the hunter.

How far can your night vision see?

Expect to see on average 200+ yards in the dark.  Three factors determine how far you will see with IR night vision.  The first is the quality of the night vision CMOS camera board that is used.  Our DC1000 CMOS boards are HD and have a very low LUX rating with extends your visibility during twilight hours of dusk and dawn.  The next factor is the quality of the IR illuminator used.  Our IR is 850nm, focusable, and has 5 watts of power.  IR is invisible light so it can not be measured in LUMS which is a measurement of visible light.  To compare IR look at the watts rating and emitter manufacturer.  We use an Osram Oslon Black emmitter driven by a 5 watt quality circuit board.

Can I use Digital Crosshairs night vision clip-on in the day light?

Accepted Answer

Yes.  The Digital Crosshairs 1000 optics are optimized for night vision by not filtering any infra red light at all.  This will cause you to see distorted colors during daylight hours because of the ambient IR light in the atmostphere.  All kits come with a daylight filter that corrects this providing HD crisp colors during daylight hours.  At night the filter is removed and you will see images in black and white.  Digital Crosshairs is manufactured without an automated movement of this filter intentionally. Our belief is that the fewer moving part and switches, fewer fail points, means the longer a product will work.

How does IR night vision work?

IR night vision uses a CMOS night vision video board to display reflected invisible IR light as a visible image on an LCD display.  Humans and animals can not see light in the IR spectrum.  By projecting IR light with an illuminator, the CMOS video board processes the reflected IR light and creates visible black and white images on an integrated LCD display.  The display may be very small and enclosed in the scope or larger and attached to the gun.

Do I need an IR illuminator for night vision?

Yes. Digital night vision and intensifier tube night vision see reflected IR light. Digital Crosshairs 1000 an all other digital IR night vision systems use a CMOS night vision video board to turn invisible IR light into a visible image an a display. These boards will work in daylight too, but the way they enable you to see in the dark is with IR light that humans an animals can not see. As a general rule, the more IR light you provide the farther you will be able to see with any night vision system.

Thermal night vision does not see reflected light, it see heat signatures.

How much recoil can it handle?

The DC1000 models can handle you heaviest recoils from rifles, shotguns, pistols, crossbows, and spring airguns.  This system is designed with no moving parts and hand soldered connections that seldom fail.  No unit has ever been returned due to damage from recoil.

Will I have to re-zero my scope?

Accepted Answer

No.  Then only adjustment will be to the eye relief on the scope to pair it with the Digital Crosshairs 1000 clip-on.

Will it work with my scope?

Accepted Answer

Digital Crosshairs 1000 night vision clip-on will work with any scope as long as your scope does not filter IR light. Most scopes do not. Scopes with an orange or red ocular lens may filter IR light.

All mounts are included with the kit for 1" and 30mm scope tubes. If your scope is larger we will send you replacement mount free of charge.

The eyepiece adapter will mount on a scope eye piece up to 50mm in diameter.

How much magnification will I get?

We use  your scope's optics and magnification capabilities.  Digital Crosshairs 1000 will focus clearly at the lower magnification on your scope.  If your scope has adjustible objective / paralax then that can be used to focus Digital Crosshairs at any magnification on your scope.

Can I still look through the scope?

Accepted Answer

No.  The eye piece clip-on covers the scope with a CMOS night vision camera that looks down the scope tube.  You will target by looking at the provided targeting screen that shows your scope's field of view.

Question 11

Will the screen light my face up?

Accepted Answer

The screen is typically mounted on the gun away from your face.  It is adjustable for brightness and can be dimmed down.  If you are sitting in an enclosed stand you may want to use the provided red filters which changed the targeting screen to a faint red glow.
